Misleading

Several Facebook (FB) pages published a misleading video of Vice President Leni Robredo during her campaign sortie in Jagna, Bohol that clipped her statement so it sounded like she was promising a corrupt government.

The video appeared on April 3 and featured a short clip taken from an episode of GMA News’ 24 Oras Weekend where Robredo is shown saying: “Ang pinapangako po namin ni Senator Kiko sa inyo, isang pamahalaan na hindi lang corrupt (What Senator Kiko and I promise you is a government that is not just corrupt).”

One of the FB pages bore the caption: “Pinapangako pala ni Lenlen at Match ang pamahalaang hindi lang corrupt, kundi, lutang pa? Aba’y sobra pa nga. Ang galeng ano? ([Leni and Kiko] are promising a government that is not just corrupt, but also insane? That is too much. So excellent, ‘no?)”

The video was stripped of its full context. The 11-second news clip was taken from the April 2 episode of 24 Oras Weekend where Robredo said the following:

Ang pinapangako po namin ni Senator Kiko sa inyo, isang pamahalaan na hindi lang korap… Na ‘pag ang gobyerno ‘di korap, ‘pag ang mga lingkod-bayan matitino at mahuhusay, kahit kakarampot ang pera ng pamahalaan, marami ang matutulungan.

(What Senator Kiko and I promise you is a government that is not only corrupt… If a government is not corrupt, if the public servants are sensible and capable, even if the government has little funds, many can be helped).”
