A YouTube video claims that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has stolen the country’s gold reserves. This has no basis.
Published on Feb. 25, the erroneous video carried the headline:
“TIBAG NA SILA DITO! GINTO SA BANGKO SENTRAL UNANG KINAWAT NI NGAGBA?
(THEY’VE BEEN CAUGHT HERE! WAS GOLD IN BANGKO SENTRAL FIRST STOLEN BY NGAGBA?)”
The thumbnail also bore the text:
“BISTADO NA ANG TALLANO GOLD! IBALIK NINYO ANG GINTO!
(THE TALLANO GOLD HAS BEEN EXPOSED! RETURN THE GOLD!)”
On the same day, a Facebook (FB) user reuploaded the false video while a page reposted the YouTube link with a caption:
“Gold Reserved ng Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas inubos na daw ni ngagba ayon kay FPRRD.
(The gold reserves of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas have allegedly been depleted by the addict, according to FPRRD (former president Rodrigo Duterte)”
The inaccurate video featured the speech of the former president during the Cebu People’s Indignation Rally on Feb. 22 in Mandaue City where he accused Marcos of stealing and selling the Philippines’ reserves in gold.
In a Feb. 24 statement, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said that it has the sole authority to manage the country’s gross international reserves (GIR), including gold, for the foreign exchange requirements of the Philippines.
